Dear Iain,
I was in a shop recently and saw they were selling what appeared to be Spode ware with the Italian design on it which I like. But it looked different from the plates I already had at home (is that grammatically correct?).
The blue colour was harsher, somehow and the plates were heavier. I wondered if they were imitation Spode. Then I looked at the bottom of one of the plates and saw that it was made in Malaysia and recalled that the company had started manufacturing abroad.
When I got back home, I examined all the Spode dishes I had – some of which are only a few years old – and saw that they were all made in England which shows that, in this case anyway, something has been lost in the bid to cut costs; I noticed the negative change before discovering that the dishes had been made abroad. Or maybe they really were counterfeit! Well – if they’re made abroad, they are fake in a way because one of the pleasures of buying Spode ware is that it is/was made in England.
In any case, it’s tragic that we are losing our manufacturing base in the UK – we must fight against it!!!!!!!!!
Cheers,
Deedee
